Carmel Fire Department and Hamilton County
Emergency Management Agency to test
Outdoor Warning Sirens during Severe Weather Preparedness Week
Carmel, IN – As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, March 19 – 23, the National Weather Service (NWS) has selected Tuesday, March 20, as the date for the Statewide Tornado Drill this year. During the drill, NWS will send a Tone Alerted warning message over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radios. Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Carmel Fire Department will also be setting off the outdoor warning sirens in Carmel.
There will be one drill initiated by the NWS, Hamilton County EMA, and Carmel Fire Department on Tuesday, March 20, designed to allow counties to test warning sirens in a simulated emergency situation. The test will be initiated at 10:15 a.m. The primary benefits of the test are for school participation, the majority of the workforce who are at their place of employment at the time and families to practice their own personal safety measures within their home.
The Carmel Fire Department encourages all resident to have a plan in place for weather emergencies. Have a location designated inside your house, business, or school to take shelter if necessary. It is also important to remember that outdoor warning sirens are for outdoor warning only. Some residents may not hear the siren inside their home or business. For this reason, we encourage you to purchase a NOAA Weather Radio.
The Carmel Fire Department and Carmel Police Department will be out monitoring the warning sirens in the City of Carmel to ensure each is operating properly.
