Bike to Work Day Returns Friday
– This month, the City of Carmel is celebrating National Bike Month and Friday, May 18th has been designated National Bike to Work Day. Carmel residents and those who work in Carmel are encouraged to bicycle to work or to park their vehicles at the Monon Community Center and ride to work from there. The Monon Community Center’s parking lot will be available for bike to work commuters to park their cars while they ride to and from work on the 18th.
To make the morning ride to work even more enjoyable, Commuter Connect, the City
of Carmel, and the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation Department are hosting a free continental breakfast at the Monon Community Center at Central Park from 6:00 – 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18th. It will be free and open to all Bike to Work Day participants. This gathering will be especially convenient for those using the adjacent Monon Greenway to get to their workplace.
Carmel has been designated a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists from 2006 through 2019 and was recently rated the 13th best city for biking by the People for Bikes’ new city rating system. “As you can tell by our current Monon Expansion project in Midtown, the City is working hard to improve our facilities for bicycles by making trail connectivity a priority and improving pathways," said Mayor Jim Brainard. "Bike to Work Day is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the 5.2 mile Monon Greenway and nearly 200 miles of paths and trails in Carmel. We hope this event and others in May will help us see our bikes as more than just a fun diversion, but as a means of transportation on a regular basis."
Communities across the country are asked each year to celebrate May as National Bicycling Month by the League of American Bicyclists. On May 7th, the Carmel City Council declared May as Bike Month and Bike to Work Day is one of the events celebrating the month. The City of Carmel has also been promoting bicycle safety throughout the month. Bicycling has many health benefits. It is the most energy-efficient form of travel ever devised and can accommodate almost any level of fitness. It is also good for the environment as it helps reduce air, water and noise pollution. Carmel encourages anyone who has ever considered biking to work to give it a try this year.
