Carmel salting city streets to battle icy conditions

Carmel, IN – Carmel Street Department trucks have begun salting all of the streets in the City of Carmel this afternoon in an attempt to keep them from becoming too icy before any heavy snowfall. The forecast continues to call for several inches of snow before this current winter system leaves central Indiana.

As a reminder, when the city receives up to three inches of snow, the Carmel Street Department plows only main streets such as Range Line Road, Main Street, Gray Road and secondary streets such as Brookshire Parkway, Lakeshore Drive East and West, Spruce Drive and High Drive. When the city receives three or more inches of snow, main and secondary streets are plowed and salted as the snow falls.

After the snow stops falling and blowing, the entire city is plowed. It takes nearly 24 hours to plow the city's 460 miles of roadway and 450 cul-de-sacs. Salting is routinely done only on main and secondary streets. Bridges, hills, and intersections are also salted as needed.

Please drive safely and give our City plows and trucks plenty of room as they do their work today.
