Changes Coming to City Trash and Recycling Service
Weekly recycling to be added under new contract; no more opting out
– The City of Carmel will begin offering weekly recycling services under a new trash and recycling ordinance approved by the City Council on December 5, 2016. The weekly service will begin January 1 and is an improvement to the every-other-week recycling schedule that had been in place.
The new contract with Republic Services, which has served a majority of Carmel for many years, calls for the company to now cover all residents in Carmel. By entering into an exclusive agreement, ending the old “opt-out” option for residents, the city was able to receive a better price for taxpayers.
“This is truly a win-win for our residents who want good service at good prices along with weekly curbside recycling,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “Republic Services has long been a great partner with our Utility Department, offering superior service.”
Monthly rates will increase slightly from $9.90 to $11.18 per residential customer in 2017. The rate will gradually rise to $13.31 over the next six years under the terms of the contract. The city sought bids on this service from qualified providers and Republic Services was the low bidder by more than 20 percent.
Under the terms of the contact, city residents will receive the following:
- Weekly Recycling: The program will include weekly recycling service the same day as trash pick-up.
- Bulky Landscape Waste Removal: In addition to the free 20 bags/bundles of landscape waste pick up in April, May and October 15th to December 15th, residents can also schedule a special bulky landscape waste at $10.00 per pick-up. This pickup includes up to 8 cubic yards of material.
- In order to get the best possible price at program rebid; and to reduce wear and tear on City streets, the City Council eliminated the opt-out provision to be effective January 2017. The Carmel City trash & recycling service will be provided to all single family homes and eligible townhome communities in Carmel starting January 1, 2017. Separate instructions will be mailed to those residents who previously opted out of the City program.
The City of Carmel residential trash & recycling service provided by Republic Services receives exceptionally high customer satisfaction ratings from Carmel residents. A recent independent professional poll showed a 95% approval rating, higher than any other utility or related service.
