Traffic Offenses for which you must appear in court:

  • Accident Offenses
  • Speeding (in a Worksite Zone with Workers Present)
  • Failure to Stop for School Bus Stop Arm
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving without being licensed to drive
  • Driving while Suspended
  • Operating Without Financial Responsibility
  • Any offense for which you are told to personally appear by the arresting officer or court personnel.
  • Some persons will also have to appear because of points on their driving record.
  • Anyone who does not pay before his/her scheduled court date must also appear on that date.
  • PERSONS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE MUST APPEAR, AND MUST APPEAR WITH A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Must Appear Violations.

You must appear in court on the date listed on your ticket if the violation involves:
A Personal Watercraft
Imprudent Operation of A Boat
An ATV or Off Road Vehicle
A snowmobile
Fishing Violations
Hunting/Trapping Violations
Any offense for which you are told to personally appear by the arresting officer or court personnel.

  • PERSONS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE MUST APPEAR, AND MUST APPEAR WITH A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Failure to appear or failure to pay will result in license suspension until the case is cleared, and/or a warrant being issued for your arrest.  A default judgment may be entered if you fail to appear.

When you appear in Court…

Persons receiving tickets that require a Court appearance, or persons who do not wish to resolve the case by pleading guilty and paying the assessed fine should be aware of the following:

  1. Payment must be made in the form of cash, money order, cashier’s check,  or certified check. Company and personal checks are not accepted.
  2. Anyone under 18 years must appear in Court, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  3. Persons may call the office of the Carmel City Court. However, wait at least five (5) days after receiving a ticket to ensure the Court staff has the information on file.

Persons must appear in Court on the date shown on the bottom of the ticket, which is an initial hearing date, not a trial date. Persons may request a continuance by writing and filing a request with the Court Clerk at least five days before the scheduled hearing date.

Business casual dress is required to be worn for Court appearances. Tank tops; hats and caps; and ripped, torn, dirty or revealing clothing are not appropriate.  Anyone dressed in such attire may be asked to leave and return when dressed appropriately.
