Basic Requirements
Minimum Requirements For Carmel Police Officer Applicants
- Must be a high school graduate, as evidenced by a transcript issued by an accredited high school. An achievement test certificate from an accredited high school or State Board of Education is acceptable.
- Shall possess a valid Indiana drivers license (or obtain one within 60 days of becoming an Indiana resident) and have no more than six (6) active points.
- Shall be a US citizen.
- Shall be at least 21 years of age, and under the age of 40 or be a veteran who has at least 20 years of service in the armed forces and be no older than 40 years and six months.
- Shall be drug-free, and have no convictions for driving under the influence of drugs.
- Shall have no more then two-(2) alcohol-related violations as a minor (18-21 years of age).
- Shall not have a conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), or operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) in excess of 0.08%.
- Shall have no felony convictions.
- Shall have no convictions for any Class A misdemeanor.
- Shall have no convictions for selected Class B misdemeanors. The final decision regarding disqualification in this area will be made by the Chief of Police.
- Shall not have received other than an honorable discharge from the military, or other discharge with honorable conditions.
- If hired, shall establish residency as required by state law or local ordinance.
Current Salary and Benefits
- Entry level starting salary, $68,662.00
- Longevity pay at $250/year for years 1-10 and $310/year for years 11-25 ($7,150 max)
- Deferred Compensation Plan – City match 50% at 5 years longevity (city will match up to $11,500 per year – Employee can contribute up to $23,000)
- 20 Year Retirement Eligibility– 52% of First-Class Patrolman salary (max of 76% at 32 years of service) plus up to $7,150 longevity pay
- 8 hours comp/overtime pay per month for patrol officers (approx. $2,200 a year extra if the overtime is taken)
- Take home car with statewide use for non-probationary officers (residency may be in Hamilton or contiguous counties)
- Nightshift differential pay - $2,080 a year
- 12 vacation days (after probationary year) 13 holidays (plus holiday pay $15/hr. when working on a holiday)
- $1,400 annual clothing allowance
- Sick time payout - up to 24 hours pay/year.
- Up to 25 hours of pay for successful completion of semi-annual fitness assessment
- Specialty pay/Positional pay ranging from $1000-$3000 annually.
- $3.00 /hr. - Instructor Pay (while instructing) $10.00/hr. - FTO Pay (while training)
- $10 weekdays and $25 weekends/holidays - on call pay for Patrol Officers
- Call out pay for specialties. (minimum of 2 hrs.)
- Court Pay (minimum of 2 hrs.)
Wellness Programs
- Forte Sports Medicine and Orthopedics First Line Tactical Athlete Program- The First Line Tactical Athlete Program was first developed to provide the highest quality of care which includes screenings, patient education, individualized preventative programming, and offers the following services:
- On-site Athletic Trainer, direct access to imaging, rehabilitation services and referrals to Forte Sports Medicine’s network of highly skilled subspecialist physicians.
- Mental Health Care- CPD works in partnership to provide mental health care providers to provide the following services:
- Individual counseling (sworn officers only, not family members)
- Participate in ride-a longs with officers
- Participate in Police Officer Support Team debriefings after critical incidents
- Present trainings on PTSD, Officer Wellness, Emotional Survival of LEOs, Stress Management and any other topic needed
Primary Plus Employee Health Center
- Open to all employees, retirees and dependents on the city’s health insurance.
- No cost to the employee for office visits, labs or medications provided by the clinic.
- Employees are not required to use PTO for clinic visits made during regularly scheduled work hours.
Military Benefits
- IC 10-16-7-2 - 120 hours of separate paid military leave at full salary
- Supplemental pay for the difference between active duty pay and city salary whenever the employee is ordered to active duty (other than active duty for training).
- 100% of employer health benefits paid during active duty (other than active duty for training)
- Special recognition on Veterans day
Physical Fitness Testing
The following physical fitness tests are pass/fail and must be successfully completed to continue in the hiring process. It would be in each applicants best interest to prepare themselves for the physical fitness portion of the hiring process. No special equipment is necessary to perform these tests.
