The Criminal Investigations Division is comprised of two main sections, Criminal Investigations and Forensic Services. Criminal Investigations consists of a lieutenant, two sergeants, and ten detectives that investigate cases that include child abuse, sex crimes, theft, burglary, robbery, fraud, as well as death investigations. Detectives are generally assigned more complex cases and have multiple cases they are pursing at the same time.
The Carmel Police Department has detectives assigned to task forces which specialize in child exploitation, cyber-crimes, and digital forensic examinations.
Each detective receives training to investigate cases of all types, however they may specialize in a particular type of crime. The specialization allows for more in-depth training, experience, and networking.
Detectives work with cooperative citizens, businesses, a diverse group of government entities, as well as other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Detectives regularly coordinate with Department of Child Services, Adult Protective Services, Child Advocacy Center, and Victim Advocacy Groups to ensure victims are receiving appropriate support services from both governmental and non-governmental agencies. Carmel PD detectives also assist in pre-employment background investigations, along with new officer orientation and training.
The Forensic Services Unit consists of three crime scene specialist and one property room/evidence clerk. The Forensic Services Unit is utilized for crime scene and evidence processing on higher felony cases. Property received by the Carmel Police Department may be evidence, found property, property for safe keeping, or contraband and is maintained by the property room/evidence clerk.
The property room is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Persons wishing to retrieve property from the property room should call and schedule and appointment at 317-571-2500.
