Carmel Police Department School Resource Program

SRO National ConferenceThe Carmel Police Department’s School Resource Unit (SRU) provides the Carmel Clay Schools community with Carmel Police Officers focused on building positive relationships with youth.

The unit started in 2000 with one detective working out of the high school. In 2005 the unit expanded by adding an SRO to the 3 middle schools. In 2008 2 uniform officers were assigned to the high school. In 2018 Carmel Clay Schools passed a school safety referendum that would provide for additional SROs. Today the SRU consists of a Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, and 18 School Resource Officers (SROs).
Each school in the Carmel Clay School district has an SRO assigned, with Carmel High School having four.

Every SRO is trained through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) utilizing the concepts of teaching, informal counseling, and school protection (law enforcement).
The SRU’s mission is to provide a safe environment for the students, staff, and families within the Carmel Clay Schools Community through building relationships, providing education, and establishing mentorships. SROs frequently interact with students and families outside of school when working community events or even when seen off-duty. SROs are forming life-long bonds with not just students, but families and staff.
